How the IB DP Prepares Me for the Real World
Embarking on the journey of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) at Manchester International School was a decision I made with the awareness that it would present numerous challenges. However, what has truly surprised me is the level of autonomy I have over my educational journey. As I navigate my final year as a Grade 12 student, I’ve been afforded the incredible opportunity to delve deep into various subjects, select a topic for my extended essay that resonates with my interests, and customize my CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) experiences to reflect my passions and values.
For my extended essay, I opted to explore a subject that fascinates me: the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of medicine. This topic not only aligns with my interest in technology but also addresses critical ethical debates that are increasingly relevant in today's society. The process of researching this topic required me to engage with a wide range of academic sources, gather data, and critically analyze the impact of AI on patient care and medical decision-making. Writing and presenting my findings have not only honed my research and writing skills but have also instilled in me a sense of confidence that I know will serve me well in university and my future career.
What I find truly exceptional about the IB DP is its holistic approach to education. It does not merely prepare students for examinations; rather, it equips us with essential life skills. The emphasis on critical thinking, time management, and interdisciplinary learning has enhanced my ability to approach complex problems from multiple perspectives. At Manchester International School, I have benefited from a supportive and well-structured environment. The effective governance and robust SOA (Student Organization and Activities) infrastructure ensure that each student's unique needs are considered and met, fostering an atmosphere of encouragement and growth.
Reflecting on my experience so far, I feel a strong sense of preparedness for the future. The IB Continuum school model—being the only one in the region—has provided me with a distinctive educational experience that has transformed my understanding of learning. I am grateful for the wealth of experiences I have gained here, which have shaped my academic and personal development as I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
