Food Waste – What Can We Do?
Did You Know? One-third of Food Goes to Waste!
Have you ever thrown away a half-eaten lunch or left food on your plate? You’re not alone! Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted worldwide, while millions of people go hungry. As students, we may not fully realize the extent of this issue, but food waste is harming both our planet and our fellow human beings.
Why is Food Waste a Problem?
• Wasted food equals wasted resources, including water, land, and energy used to produce it.
• Food in landfills generates more greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change.
• Millions of people go hungry while perfectly good food is disposed of.
How Can Kids Help Reduce Food Waste?
• Eat What You Take: Start with smaller portions, and feel free to take seconds if you're still hungry.
• Plan Your Meals: Avoid buying extra food that might spoil before you eat it.
• Store Food Properly Learn how to keep fruits and vegetables fresh for longer.
• Compost Food Scraps: Banana peels and vegetable leftovers can be transformed into plant fertilizer.
• Educate Friends and Family: Share what you learn about responsible eating to raise awareness.
School Cafeteria Challenge: Can We Waste Less?
At school, a lot of food is wasted in the cafeteria. What if we started a challenge? We could track the amount of food waste for one week and brainstorm ways to reduce it. For instance, we can use reusable lunch boxes, finish our meals, and encourage our friends to do the same.
Join the movement! Small steps can make a big difference. Together, let’s work towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger and create a world where food is shared, not wasted!
