Post Date:Sat 20 Apr 2019
Pride and festive cheer marked the Thai Pongal celebrations held on 12th January 2019 at Manchester International School. Students and all the staffs came in the traditional clothes and exhibited joy and pride as they filled the campus with the land’s cultural aura. A massive rangoli was drawn. The village set up was beautifully created in the school ground for the Pongal celebrations. The entire celebrations was organized in the form of ‘VILLU PAATTU’ .It helped us to show the significance of Pongal and uphold the traditional values.
The programme commenced with the prayer song， followed by the Tamizh Thai Vaazhthu. A lovely welcome note was given by our children to welcome the audience for the celebrations. The students skit on Bohi , Maatu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal was the highlight. They gave an excellent view on the customs followed in the celebrations along with some meaningful thoughts like “DO NOT USE PLASTICS”,”FOLLOW THE TRAFFIC RULES” . The students participated in the drama and did a magnificent job to make laurels to the Pongal celebrations. The emotional abilities and acting skill of students exhibit our true tradition and culture.
The students revived the festivity in a village with their colorful folk dance. This dance included all the elements of our traditional dance, like “POIKAAL KUTHIRAI”, "KOLAATTAM", "OYILAATTAM". This served a colorful feast to the eyes of the audience.
Department wise, the sweet Pongal was prepared by the teachers in a new earthen pot. Once Pongal was ready, it was offered to the Sun. Afterwards it was distributed among teachers and students who left for home with the warm sweet after-taste of Pongal.
To the surprise of the audience the teachers from various departments performed the Kummi dance for the fusion of traditional Pongal songs. As a part of celebrations the traditional games like "Uriyadithal", "Kayiru izhuthal(Thugs of War)", "Filling the tub", "Pass the ball" were conducted for the teachers and the students. The teachers and the students were really energetic and participated enthusiastically in all the games.
Students learnt that these festivals are sacred moments that help everyone to establish love, unity and nourish their relationships. The Pongal festival celebrations in our school is a true manifestation of our rich culture and traditions. We can be seen at its vibrant best!!!
