  • The Great Battle!

    date posted:Sun 02 Sep 2018

Usually battles are fought on the battlefield, but this one was fought at Manchester International School.  This battle was of a different kind - ‘The Battle of the Brains.’ Manchester International School conducted its annual inter-class debate competition on 17th July, ‘18, wherein Grades 6 - 12 MYP students took part.  There were in all 32 participants well versed with their subject matter; fluent in their delivery and tooth for a tooth retaliations and rebuttals; but not without a sense of humor, when it came to upholding their views.  The judges, needless to say, might have jolly well indulged themselves in such a battle when it came to deciding the winners.

The topics themselves lent to an outpouring of verbose thoughts and pent-up emotions especially because of their relevance, weightage and modern demand or urgency. The topics such as, ‘Students should be allowed to use mobiles and other gadgets in schools,’ saw a fierce battle of rebuffs.  The audience was enraptured, at one time into vows, ayes and peals of laughter; while, at the other time, showing deep sense of enthusiasm of being a part of the great battle of the wits. The spectators had keen desire of sharing their own views about the aforementioned topic for reasons one can easily suspect!

Most of the spectators had a share of their say, in one or the other debates held over 1 ½ hours in the auditorium. Incidentally, one blighter asked, “If they (‘For the Motion’) Win, will we be allowed to use mobiles in schools?”  At one moment, the chairperson could not withhold himself after listening to an emotional speech on behalf of the animal world debating the topic, ‘Animals must not be experimented upon.’  The chairman in a lighter vein retorted that if the animals from the wild had to be present in the auditorium, they would have filled many a bucket enough to water the MIS gardens. (…….of course, tears)!  The other topics, too, were equitably enveloped with humor as much as their intensity of seriousness.  Another team routed the opponents’ aspersions (malpractice, technical failure, et al), with their one-point agenda, ‘All computer generated problems have a solution’ as a fitting answer to, ‘All school examinations must be held on line.’  The students were so well prepared that they were not caught unawares when the chair asked for substantial statistics and up-to-date data to prove their respective claims.  The children well cited the evidence as much as they were necessary and when required from reputed sources.

The students are now hell bent on booking a seat for the next round of the battle, which actually, in a certain sense, cannot be won or lost!

The following were the topics; alongside the battlers and list of winners below:

    1.            Grade VIA  v/s VIB:  Junk food must be banned from schools

    2.            Grade VII v/s VIII:  Internet causes more harm than good

    3.            Grade IXA v/s IXB:  It is morally acceptable to experiment on animals

    4.            Grade X v/s XI Students should be allowed to use Cell phones and other gadgets in school

    5.            Grade XIIA v/s XIIB:  On-line examinations should be made compulsory in school
